I was stupefied by a dialogue I heard between two students who were coincidentally in the same bus with me on the way to school. One of the two asked about a homework whether it had been done or not. The question was answered with the same words which are usually said by a young sinetron artist; Mana sempat gitu loh!. Wah, rese lu. Disetrap si Trondolo tau rasa lu.
I think its not a big deal if gitu loh and rese lu are said by those who live in an area that use the words communally. But if the words are said by those who usually use javanese as daily language, if they usually say aku and kowe and replace those with Gue and Elo because the last two are more good-listened, we must be wary. Further, I am sure that Trondolo is the teacher who gave the homework.
TV, THE GREAT RULER
My experience above shows us how effective a television to transform values. We do not need to retell about Agus who is smacked down by his classmates. We do not need to retell about Tuti who is afraid to go to the restroom by herself at night because she is worry of Suster Ngesots appearance. We do not need to talk anymore about Mr. Sapto who is despised by his students that are inspired by High School students who insulted their clumsy teacher in an evening sinetron, at some hours that they actually have to study. We do not need to discuss those anymore to show how bad the impact of this living room electrical square box. Because, if something has been known bad, everyone will be aware of it. But who realized the dangerous of watching an artist who uses anti-aging lotion. From a singer who makes a calling by using an eleven million rupiah three G handphone. Or a handsome celebrity who rides a fast excellent motorcycle?.
Actually, what I have written later is same or even more dangerous than the negative impacts written on newspapers. I say so because a few finds it as a danger. A threat which destroys wider and longer. Its true. How if the moral degradation is not realized as a threat but as a common impact of modernity; if someone acts different with the other modern people then they will be called as old-fashioned. If one doesnt use a product, for instance, he or she is the other. Someone outside of us. Have you ever about an SMP students who wanted to finish his life just because her parents had no money to pay the study tour fee? It is only a negative impact of we and the other paradigm. This SMP student felt disappointed because she was not one of we ( her schoolmates ). So she was the other.
Now lets muse two true stories I had seen. We can call her as Ria, an SMP student. She admitted to steal a famous hand and body lotion, its her teachers, when she was in her teachers house. She knew that her teacher uses the hand and body like she always watches on T.V. advertisement. She really wanted the product, but she had no money. Moreover, the student stole not only the hand and body but also her teachers eye glasses. She thought, she would be more beautiful if she wore the glasses. Something stupid because her eyes are normal.
This is the second, Roni ( its not the real name ), a handsome boy in his school, didnt want to go to school because his father couldnt buy him a motorcycle. He was shy because his friends went to the school by their own motorcycle but he didnt.
But, once again I say, a few people realize that this begins when they let television teach their childrens way of thinking. Again and again, simple persuasions, without our awareness, saved in our long-term memory and change to be a desire to imitate or to consume.
HYPER-REALITY
A resign television reporter said why he resigned from his job. He felt that his job was incompatible with his inner-self. He found that televisions contribution in educating people is not significant. Television often broadcasts a program which they call it as public need. If sexuality, mystic, and violence are something that people need, determined from the high or the low rate, those will be broadcasted in big portions. And it is getting worse, when a television broadcast succed in broadcasting a programme, other television broadcasts will create the same programme. But why? The reason is a high-rated programme will attract a lot of advertisements. Rate is everything to television broadcasts.
The threat begins. For some hours our brains are fulfiled with mystical stories, pornografy, and violence, without our awareness. The programme will change our way of thinking. During the programmes, we also see commercial breaks that fill us with images, persuade us to buy something which is not really necessary.
Is it true that what we consume today is not really necessary? Please think about this condition: for most Javanese, especially in the past, beauty is a woman with proportional body, big breast, and big hip. But nowadays, it is different. Anywhere in the world, beauty is kutilang darat ( kurus, tinggi, langsing dan dadanya rata or thin, tall, slim, and flat breast ). No wonder, if you read on a newspaper, there was an American girl who was dead because of extreme diet. She got no slim body but anorexia which causes her death.
From now on, women are made comfortless with their condition. Yesterday, they were comfortless with their hair style. Because the nice hair is the straight one, they make their hair straight. Before this hair style occurs, the nice hair is the curly one. So maybe you still remember how busy a woman was to make her hair curly.
Today, they want white skin. Hundreds thousand rupiah spent to bring it into reality. Perhaps, tomorrow they will be more comfortless with their fingers, their short neck, narrow mouth, or the others. Then, more thousand rupiah will be spent. The producer will be richer because of those womens comfortless. Remember, sometimes a half of our students in the class are girl. They are the next target or they have been.
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Audio-Visual media is much more effective than a media with audio of visual effect only. Reading an advertisement will influence you like when you watch and listen to it. By the medias, we are influenced to consume again and again. Consuming something that actually is not a need. For producer it is: we sell what we want to sell, not what the costumers want to buy. But for costumers, there is no choice. And bad thingsI mentioned above happen.
But dont sell your television so soon. Or throw it into rubbish box. Because the most important is to change ourselves. For these days, the best thing we can do is to turn off our television for some hours. Until it changes into real educating media. Are you brave enough?
